Strong results for NRC19

W

e are pleased to announce that NRC19 was a record auction for Adams. During the Evening Sale, a lively bidding took place in the auction room and many participated online during both day and evening sessions.

After an intense bidding war, the hammer came down at €455,832 for the pièce de résistance of the auction - Lynn Chadwick's life-sized 1956 sculpture Two Dancing Figures. This marks the first time a work of this scale by Chadwick was auctioned in The Netherlands.

Works by CoBrA artists were in high demand. An impressive painting by Karel Appel from 1958 was sold for €253,240, an imposing Cow by his hand from 1982 made €97,215 and the painted postcard to Simon Vinkenoog from 1965 changed hands for €20,740. Alechinsky's Le Rose Habité from 1960 went for the fine price of  €246,278. A work on paper by Constant sold for €16,461 and a painting by Lucebert for €18,993.

There was great interest in a number of German artists. The characteristic painting N.Y. Cab from 1992 by Rainer Fetting sold for €49,256, his intriguing Kleines Selbstportrait from 1986 for €15,195, and Karl Horst Hödicke's dreamy work Blaue Stunde from 1983 for €16,851.

The result of €38,886 for the expressive painting Johanna Hoeve near Westeremden (1974) by Jannes de Vries set an auction record for the artist. In addition, the €41,479 for Kees van Bohemen's 1961 racer was the second highest price paid at auction for the artist.

A special feature of the auction was the interview and other memorabilia from John Lennon and Yoko Ono's first 'Bed-In' at the Hilton Hotel in Amsterdam. This lot was sold for €64,810.

Apart from all this, very strong results were achieved for, among others, the luminist painting Aan de Amstel (c. 1908) and the 1928 gouache by Leo Gestel (€33,702 and €11,018), a druksel by H.N. Werkman (€21,526), a watercolour with Bomschuiten near Scheveningen by H. W. Mesdag (€12,314), an atmospheric still life by Else Berg (€9,722), two works on paper by Roger Raveel from the early 1980s (€7,778 and €5,185), a colourful pastel by Wolf Kahn (€9,722) and a charming little beach scene by Jacob Maris (€7,778).
