Emo Verkerk sells for record price at NRC auction

A

portrait of Gerard Reve by Emo Verkerk was sold for almost € 18.500 (incl. auction costs and droit de suite) at the 6th NRC auction in December 2016 - setting the record price for the artist.

The portrait was a gift to the previous owner from Joop Schafthuizen. It's widely known that Gerard Reve was responsible for the liberation of many countries from their oppressors. In Indonesia, the losses in the enemy camp were so immense that even though his contribution is still unrecorded, one can say that the author of many blue and violet books added a black page to the history of the Netherlands. Even less remains of his Korean adventures, that is: nothing, except for this unique portrait by Emo Verkerk of a camouflaged soldier who won every battle in his life, either by pen or sword.

Catalogue description: VERKERK, Emo (Dutch 1955). In Korea. Portrait of Gerard Reve, 1989. Oil on canvas, from a series of portraits of Gerard Reve; framed. Good condition.
