NRC Art, Jewellery & Bags: A Heated Bidding War
The heatwave did not diminish the success of the NRC Art, Jewellery & Bags auction! Strong results were seen across all categories, with a few standout highlights. Once again, the Jewellery & Bags section—launched by Adams two years ago—proved it has secured a firm position within the auction landscape.
One of the highlights of the evening auction was the unique druksel Mannenkop met achtergrond in geel en groen (1943) by Hendrik Nicolaas Werkman, from the collection of Ate Zuithoff (Skipper of De Blauwe Schuit). It sold for €36,294, many times its estimate and a stunning result. Many bids came from both the room and online for the sculpture Auschwitz by Carel Visser, a significant piece within his body of work, eventually selling for €21,526.
Among the international artists, there was strong competition for works by Robert Longo (Gretchen €16,851; Jules €14,259), Sol LeWitt (€5,445), and Thomas Nozkowski (€4,667). Already during the viewing days, it was clear that there was also a lot of attention for contemporary Dutch artists. This translated into solid results: Stones (Red) by Maria Roosen sold for €2,463, a small 2021 painting by Steven Aalders reached €4,148, and Sarah van Sonsbeeck’s Silence is golden but this is no silence achieved the golden price of €3,371.
For the enchanting painting Vlieland by Ferdinand Hart Nibbrig from 1902 the hammer came down at €55,713. The matter painting Geelbaangroen II (1970) by Bram Bogart sold for €48,116, his earlier work Vogelcompositie (1954) for €11,018, and Karel Appel’s Head (1976) reached €9,497. Other strong results included: Jacob Hendrik Pierneef (€16,851), Carlo Brancaccio (€15,555), Paul Poiret (€5,963), Bruno Catalano (€11,018), Jean Tinguely (€4,667), Jeroen Henneman (€4,667), JCJ Vanderheyden (€13,929), Armando (€4,667), and Jan Schoonhoven (€6,000).
The jewellery and bags section also performed well. A limited edition gold necklace with diamond and gemstone set lady bird charm by Cartier sold for €4,408, a gold with diamond necklace and mother of pearl earring set by Marco Bicego fetched €2,852, a diamond tennis bracelet reached €2,852, and a gold and hardstone necklace by Ilias Lalaounis from 1975 went for €2,852. The auction featured a fine selection of wristwatches, with several exceeding their estimates, such as the Cartier Tank Basculante (€5,185) and a gold Vacheron Constantin (€3,371). Among the handbags, the Chanel Classic Medium Double Flap Bag achieved the highest result, selling for €3,889.
