NRC 19: From Old Masters to Contemporary Art

We are pleased to announce that our spring sale is now online. This time NRC Auctions will organise a special live Evening Sale on Monday, 5 June at our new location - Lange Leidsedwarsstraat 198-200 in Amsterdam, where you can join us to follow the sale and bid in person. As always, bidding is also available online via Invaluable. The second session on Tuesday, 6 June is online only.

The auction coincides with the celebration of the 75th jubilee of the CoBrA movement and features a number of high-quality pieces from CoBrA artists. The sale includes two large paintings by Karel Appel - a painting from 1958 and a truly monumental Cow from 1982 (193.5 x 448 cm.), the impressive Le Rose Habité (1960) by Pierre Alechinsky, an enormous landscape by Eugène Brands from 1974, an ink drawing by Constant Figuren in de Ruimte (1971), and a serene nude Douceur du Sud (1980) by Corneille.

Artists of international standing such as Gunther Förg, Maryan, Walasse Ting, Keith Haring, Henry Moore and Joseph Beuys are also represented in the sale. Especially notable are the impressive works by Rainer Fetting - the painter of the Neue Wilde, with the intriguing Kleines Selbstportrait (1986) and the imposing fast-paced painting N.Y. Cab (1992).

The auction also includes a few true collector’s items such as the interview with Yoko Ono and John Lennon from the first 'Bed-In for Peace' at the Hilton Hotel, Amsterdam. A lucky fan took the opportunity to interview the famous protesters. The answers, hand-written by the couple on Hilton stationery, provide a unique insight into the perception and rationale of this iconic event. Another rare item is the Kleine DADA Soirée poster by Kurt Schwitters and Theo van Doesburg issued to promote the Dutch “Dada campaign” of 1923 in the Netherlands.

The true crown of the auction is the sculpture Two dancing figures by Lynn Chadwick from 1956, conceived in the same year he won the grand prize for sculpture at the Venice Biennale. The interaction, relationship and energy created by balancing the female and male figures next to one another is the most important aspect of Chadwick’s aesthetics and will remain with him throughout his entire career. Works by Chadwick, especially from the early period, rarely appear on the market. Adams/NRC Veilingen is pleased to be the first to offer a work from this period, of this size and quality on the Dutch auction market.

Encompassing 360 lots, varying in technique, size, period, value and style, the auction includes works by
Dutch and international artists. Both a professional art collector and a regular art enthusiast can find something that appeals to their taste.

We look forward to seeing you on our viewing days!
